Today, I rescheduled my doctor's appointment for a tetanus shot to go camping with my friends. While running on a path at the camp site, I stepped on a rusty nail that went right through my shoe and into my foot. Maybe I should have kept my appointment. FML

Hahaha at #64 FYL :( Not lucky dude...

SPOOOOOOOKY!!! this morning my dad was telling about how the big fear when he was a kid was stepping on a rusty nail! Hope you don't get lockjaw!!!

You don't get tetanus from rusty nails. You only get tetanus if you get fecal matter from an animal that has tetanus in an open cut. That's right, you actually need to get infected poop in a wound. The rusty nail thing is a stupid myth, and so is dirt, that won't give it to you either. Yeah, dirt and rusty nails might have sick animal poop on them, but so might any other surface you get in a cut. It's just not that likely.

Actually, according to the center for disease control, the bacteria that cause tetanus are everywhere. Although there are naturally some tetanus bacilli in animal and human intestines, and therefore their feces, the animal does not have to be sick to have the bacteria in its waste. The main issue with stepping on rusty nails, or any nails for that matter, is that deep wounds are a risk factor in contracting tetanus, especially those "contaminated with dirt, feces, or saliva."

And tetanus thrives in the low-oxygen environment provided by rusty metal. So, it does not come FROM the rust, but the metal provides a perfect environment, as well as a means to enter the human body. (Via puncture wounds.)

Where the hell were you running? A junkyard?

Oh wow FYL. Hope that you will recover. This reminds me of the time where my family and I was returning from a trip to Vegas and we were on our way back to California. The WHOLE van had to use the restroom so we stopped at an abandoned toolshed to relieve ourselves. Right when my dad told me to watch out for the nails around me I stepped right on one and it went through my converse shoes. It pierced the skin but just barely but just to be safe, we spent the next 15 minutes waiting while my dad was trying to suck some blood out of my foot. FM Dad's Life.
