While, usually my comments are filled with sarcasm and anger, this one is different. That is truly terrible and I'm sorry for your loss. There's not much else to say, except that if it was a cat, I would feel bad for the spider who did a good deed to the world.

From what I understand, not all black widows have the red hour glass or a distinctive one. And as someone who really hates spiders, I wouldn't get close enough to try to tell. But really, the OP should have just turned the water on full blast or something instead of sending the dog in right off the bat.

for all the people that said "better dog than the person," you should know that while black widow bites are highly venomous, it is very unlikely that a healthy adult will die from the bite.

I dont know what kind of drain the OP has...but a black widow could not fit inside any of the small holes that make up mine, and if it did it would be stopped by the trap, which is just incase you drop something down there.
