Today, I saw a spider in my bathtub, so instead of killing it, i decided to bring my dog inside the bathroom to kill the spider for me. Turns out that the spider was a black widow, and my dog was bit. The dog killed the spider. The spider killed my dog. FML

I have to agree that the OP is either stupid for making this up or stupid for getting his/her dog killed. Afraid to kill a spider, sending a dog to kill the spider, not taking the dog to the vet? Real smooth.

#205, that's ridiculous and you make them seem even dumber. I've owned a dog and I actually killed spiders and removed webs from the parts of the backyard she would lie around. Maybe a bit overprotective but I did come across the occasional black widow. "Eww, a spider. Lucky will squish him up for me. 'Get 'im Lucky! Yay!'" *THUMP*

Right on #159. What the hell were you thinking? Why would you have your dog kill the friggen spider? Roll up a magazine, go grab some RAID. I feel bad for your dead dog.

I didn't read all of these (mostly rage-filled) comments, but I just want to point out that not all black widows are easy to recognize. Only females have the red hourglass, and even then the mark is on the underside of its abdomen, not on top. Females are large, while males are considerably smaller. Therefore, if it was a male or young female and thus rather small, that alone makes it hard to recognize. Most spiders in suburbia are black or brown to blend in with the environment (the vibrantly colored critters live in more exotic areas, usually), so a black widow to an inexperienced individual could have looked like any other harmless spider. One other spider to look out for, btw, is the brown recluse. They live in dark little hiding spots--shoes, for example. They're very poisonous, please don't feed those to your pets either. Another thing. This isn't a proven rule or anything, but I've noticed that if a spider is round, smallish, and puffy, it's probably harmless. If the spider's body is elongated and its first and last pair of legs are longer than the middle two pairs, it might be poisonous.

It's not your fault at all, just shitty luck. RIP doggy =(
