Talk with your wife; get agreement that your mother in law is insane enough that eventual grandchildren can't see grandma until she's gone to therapy. And apologized. And paid the money back (or at least signed a contract thay she's going to.)

Whoever is downvoting: You probably think that this is punishment for the grandma. It isn't. It is protection for the kids. I've unfortunately had to do it with two of my kids grandparents; one of them has gone through through therapy, is very happy about doing that (independent of seeing grandchildren), and is seeing their grandchildren regularly.
