That's literally in Dumb Ways to Die
OP here....I'm getting hammered on this one as I expected. Waiting on a electrician as we speak.
How did you manage to make it catch fire? Did you bypass a circuit breaker?
It was the breaker that caught fire briefly.
Did you expect the Dumb Ways to Die jokes?
Did you install new breakers? Were they not seated properly?
#46 he couldn't see it coming, the power was out
I've had that happen OP. we had an old breaker that blew when I plugged my vacuum in (it's a water filter vacuum so more powerful then my old one which never tripped my breakers before), ours sparked and left a singed mark on the panel door. my husband (an electrician) didn't believe me until he looked haha.
You know what I think you have a lot of guts to even post that on here OP. At least you're smart enough to call the electrician when the job didn't work out correctly, and not try to "fix" it more. It's not like you knew it was gonna catch fire, but yeah, not the best decision. I think you know now, and for the future, that it's best to use electrician for all types of electrical work. Good luck OP.
Thank you. Yes , lesson learned !
Guys, yes it take a few years to become electrician, but that encompass a lot more than just b residential house wiring. You can learn everything you need to know about basic rewiring your house in 4 HOURS. You do however need to be careful and disciplined, and generally not be a dumbass. Home depot sells books on wiring. There is really not much to it.
In most countries electrical work is a licenced trade, which means it's illegal to do the work without a licence. In Australia you need to complete a 4 year apprenticeship which includes supervised work and study, and ends with examinations in order to get your licence. You can't learn it in 4 hours. Good luck getting covered by insurance if you do your own electrical work and your house burns down. I personally put my safety and those around me as a priority, as apposed to saving some money.
Leave it to the professionals.. Or some Mexicans outside home depot.
Maybe you should go to home depot and get a new personality.
That was a racially biased statement. I know this is FML, but I didn't think racially biased comments were welcomed.
it's number 5 om dumb ways to die for a reason
Your power caught fire? Is that physically possible?
Way to be a smart ass #60; you know what OP meant. it's not like the poor guy is sitting there with his house that just caught on fire, I'm pretty sure he doesn't need your snotty comments, too. He didn't have to even reply. Thanks for the follow up, OP.
I have been to so many people's houses that thought they could do the work on their own.
I'm sorry you had a fire. Hopefully, the damage wasn't too bad... Next time you need tradework done call a professional. If we all could do their jobs then there wouldn't be a need for them...
In the words of Clint Eastwood - "A man has to know his limitations". Doing things yourself is great, but knowing what you are doing is important. Hopefully the damage was minimal and nobody got hurt.

That's why it takes at least 4 years to become a qualified electrician (at least where I am). No amount of money you could save is worth your life. Hope you were able to put the fire out :)
You should be leaving that to the experts...
