You shouldn't demand your SO wear the exact outfit you pick out for them every single day, but expecting your SO to look nice is totally reasonable. I know for me and with how I was raised and where I come from, dressing decent is a requirement. My fiance has totally changed his wardrobe in the 3 years we've been together and now he dresses much nicer. He said he'd never wear the stuff he's in now, but now he loves it and wants more. I did force his first polo on him for a job interview and did buy him his first button down shirt for a nice dinner we had planned, and with some encouragement he changed his mindset about those clothes and now loves them. OP probably was doing other things to drive him nuts and this just pushed him over the edge. Or they're 14.
