As a student, I would be clapping because when a teacher is absent we usually get a free period, so I don't think it's anything personal.

I remember some guys in my honors history class convinced the sub. that our teacher ends class early on Fridays. Then, spent the rest of the hour arm wrestling. #100 I agree, BrittBritt sucks.
