Today, I tried convincing my Valentine-hating boyfriend to send me a card, by explaining how important it is to me. He finally agreed and sent me a card. I opened it up, and it wished me 'harmony and well-being on Lupercalia'. What is Lupercalia? It's an ancient Roman festival where men run down the street naked, whipping people with goat skins to encourage fertility. FML

Today, as part of a charity project called Operation Valentine, I worked with 150 other volunteers to make care packages and Valentine's Day cards to send to the troops in Afghanistan, thanking them for their courage. My boyfriend called the cards "cheating" and now refuses to see me. FML

Lupercalia was also a drunken orgy; but here's a catch, the post-pubescent females got to choose with whom they wanted to copulate (sort of like a very dirty Sadie Hawkins dance). Who doesn't want that card?

hmm guess it depends on what source your looking at bit i've also read that all the young girls names were placed in a jar and each young man got to pick one... which ever lady he chose was his partner (and it sounds like more) for the duration of the festival.
