Today, I tried to explain to my history teacher why Woodrow Wilson would not have called the Great War "World War 1" as she constantly claims. I was sent to the office for my insubordination. FML

How dare you correct your teacher, OP?! Don't you know they are ALWAYS right, even when they are wrong? Tsk tsk, you definitely deserved this! But, seriously, what a douche of a teacher.

I guess the teacher must think Wilson was an EXTREME pessimist.

FYL op, I am quite a history nerd myself and I find it horrible when people refuse to admit they are wrong, if anything history teaches us that neglecting the truth causes nothing but trouble

While your teacher was definitely an ass about it, she may have been right. The term "World War I/First World War" was first used in 1914 and a written account of the war titled "The First World War" was written in 1920. Wilson may have used that term.

Actually there's quite a difference between calling it world war 1 than calling it The First World War, as "the first world war" is an accurate description, and World War 1 was actually a term invented by Times magazine in 1939. Also it's most commonly referred to as the The Great War, especially before the second war happened.

It was, however, called the first world war. This term was fist used during the 1914-18 war (1917-18 war to Americans).

That's true, but that's not the point OP was making. His teacher was saying "WWI" and not "The First World War" or "The Great War", which would have been correct.

Once again here is a great example of how the current education system is more concerned with children's behavior than if they are actually learning. FYL.

It's scary how bad some of the teachers are, that are unleashed daily onto the poor children of the world. Fortunately this seems to be an exception and most teachers are actually good at what they do.

You did not know Woodrow Wilson had psychic powers? He called WWII fifteen years before it happened. Too bad that art school did not listen to him.

Well, there were cartoons saying the generation of children born in the 20s would become cannon fodder, but that was more in response to the various treaties that had been drawn up. And no-one was anticipating what World War 2 would become. (Also, the Treaty of Versailles is basically the best caution against revenge over justice ever.)

Exactly! Anyone can tell you that Woodrow Wilson is best known for his incredible psychic abilities. Maybe if the OP had actually been listening in history class instead of trying to argue with the teacher, he/she would have known that.

It's like when I was in 8th grade and the gym teacher was telling everyone that Abraham Lincoln was born and raised in Illinois. I argued with her that no, he was born and raised in Kentucky and moved to Illinois at the start of his professional career. Her response? "Well, that's what I wrote on the cards so we're just going to go with that today." I think there was a reason why she was a gym teacher, and not a history teacher.

And why was the gym teacher making flash cards for history?

It was some stupid event involving facts about the 50 states. It was dumb. Gotta love a Catholic school education.

i used to think that all teachers are smart, now being older and knowing some friends who are teachers...i know better!
