Today, I walked in on my boyfriend of 7 years with another woman. He panicked and blamed it on the "long distance" and how we "never see each other". We've lived in the same neighbourhood since we were 5 years old, and we've lived together for the past four years. FML

He's still your boyfriend after seven years? If I'd been with someone that long they'd be either 'wife' or 'life partner' if we didn't want to get married. But certainly not 'girlfriend'.

1) Some people choose not to marry. Marriage is not compulsary. 2) OP didn't specify age, they could have started a relationship young. They live in Ireland where I do believe the age you can move into your own flat is 16 (could be wrong though). This of course means that they may only be 20 years old. 3) They may feel too young to get married.

Also, marriage can be extremely expensive, maybe they were thinking about it (Hopefully not now!) , but couldn't due to the cost.

You realise, of course, that everyone getting married is pretty much an American thing, right? Lots of other countries are perfectly fine with lifetime boyfriend/girlfriend (or even boyfriend/boyfriend or girlfriend/girlfriend, gasp!) arrangements.
