Today, I walked into my apartment and smelled something extremely repugnant. I asked my roommate what had happened and she said, "I didn't know how else to kill it!" She'd trapped a bat that was in our apartment, put it in the oven, and set it to 400 degrees. FML

Why would it even be necessary to kill it?

Why not just capture it and release it outside?? It would be less messy and more humane..

I'd take it as a sign to move out and find a new roomie, preferably one that is not crazy and won't do anything that is so inhumane. The poor bat, being baked when she could've easily released it back outside through the window :( Why did she even feel the need to kill it anyways?

Poor little bat, dying because of a complete brainless human, who should've let it go out the window.

that fact you didn't call the cops for animal abuse doesn't shine to bright on you either

I would totally agree with you if op didn't call the cops. But unless Op does a follow up for us to let us know what happened later, we just don't know one way or another, because Op didn't say she *didn't* call the cops either. At this point it's not right to speculate.

In several countries bats are protected, I'm not sure how it is for the US but here in the UK she could be charged for unnecessary cruelty and abuse, regardless of whether or not it's endangered. That would result in a hefty fine.

@151 One difference between the USA and UK in this regard is that in the UK rabies has been eradicated. That's not true in the Americas, and bats are a significant vector of rabies this side of the pond. If human/bat contact occurs, and the bat can be captured, the bat will have to be destroyed anyway in order to determine whether the bat was rabid.

Where do you live that bats are a "significant" rabies vector?

I am actually really upset and disturbed by this. :( That would be one of the absolute worst ways to die, and it didn't even need to be killed. She could be charged for something like that.

don't get a bird or a dog op. if the dog barks she might put him in a blender.

That is incredibly disturbing... What kind of person settles on slowly burning an animal to death as their only option? Never mind the fact that her first reaction was that she had to kill the poor thing instead of, I don't know...put it outside? Your roommate needs some serious help.

That's probably the sign of a psychopath..."a poor defenceless animal...I can either herd it outside a window OR STRUGGLE EVEN MORE TO INCINERATE IT IN AN OVEN"...seriously, this has upset me. :(
