Today, I wanted revenge on the rabbit who ate my garden's plants. When he returned, he was standing next to my brand new above-ground swimming pool. I pull out my 22. rifle and shot at it, but the bullet missed and popped a hole in my pool. 15,000 gallons of water flooded my basement. FML

It sucks that your pool and basement are ruined, but I think there are MANY more ways to keep an animal out of your garden.

#118: I'm a vegetarian, but I wear leather protective gear on my motorcycle, have a leather sofa, etc. My vegetarianism is a reduction in my impact on animals, rather than a complete stop; in the same way that I ride a motorcycle that does 65mpg to reduce my impact on fossil-fuel use, rather than driving no vehicle at all. If I set up a farm and put work and effort into growing crops for my consumption, or my species' consumption, then I'm perfectly justified in considering it my territory by virtue of the effort involved. Wild animals are free to decide their own fate, and don't have to be in my territory, consuming the fruits of my labour; their getting killed is no different from a predator getting killed when entering a rival predator's hunting territory. Captive animals (cattle), however, don't have this choice. Therefore I choose the regretable killing of wild animals that choose to tresspass and steal over the systematic slaughter of captive slaves wherever it is possible for me to do so without dramatically harming my standard of living.

I also wonder how many of you put salt or pellets down to kill slugs in your garden, or pour boiling water or poison into ant nests under your house, or call an exterminator when you get roaches, or swat a fly that's buzzing around your food. If any of you do, stop criticising the OP just because the pest he tried to kill is cute and fluffy and the pests you kill are not. They're all equally unwanted animals on your property.
