I'm confused on where you work considering the minimum wage is 8 dollars here in the U.S. and meaning that you could earn a twenty quiet quickly.
I live in the U.S. and minimum wage here is $7.50. It varies from city to city.
Waiting min is $2.17. They expect tips to make up the rest.
if OP works as a waiter you can give less then the minimum wage because of tips
Wait staff aren't always covered by minimum wage. They can get as low as $2.50 as they get tips. That's why I'm always careful about tipping.
I find it hard to believe that minimum wage for waitstaff personnel is STILL in the lower 2.00 range (2.17) per hour. When I worked in the beverage department of a major hotel chain from 1984 - 1986, minimum wage for wait staff was 2.07. That's 29 freaking years ago. Totally ridiculous!!!
You may find it hard to believe, but it's the truth. Waiters get paid shit even today.
I know several people who kept waiting or bartending after getting a degree because it paid so well. They make more in one 2 hour lunch rush than I do in a whole shift. And I make better than minimum wage. It's not like they're destitute compared to other unskilled laborers.
Federal minimum wage is 7.25, but that doesn't apply to waitstaff and any company with less than 50 employees in a 75 mile radius. Tipped minimum wage is only 2.17, and the company only has to make up the difference to standard min. wage if their tips don't add up. Plus they only make that payout once a year in some places.
You have obviously never worked in the hospitality business before. we get paid at the most 3.77 an hour, required by law and the rest of our minimum wage is made up of tips. It is highly illegal for the boss to take any tips from a server to begin with. Also, it varies by state. I'm speaking about the state of Florida. Other states may have higher or even lower minimum wage for servers.
Yes for servers minimum wage can be around $2-$3 BUT the tips should cover the rest to make normal minimum wage. IF the $2-$3 plus the tips do not get to minimum wage the employer has to pay the rest. Most servers don't say anything if they don't make the minimum wage because that could mean they aren't doing a good job and they might get fired.
Federal minimum wage does apply to waitstaff. If they don't make enough tips the business has to top it up to the minimum wage.
109: yeah I covered that in the comment before you...
It's a rather crappy loophole that hasn't been closed yet. Hopefully the next federal minimum wage increase law will fix it, but I'm not holding my breath.
It's 2.13 an hour... At least federal. State to state might vary, but federal is 2.13.
isn't your boss stealing then?
Wow. Where do you work? Amy's Baking Company?
You should report that! It's totally illegal, he has no right to take your tips away
maybe the boss needed it more than OP..

That's illegal for him to take your tips away. Report him
Too poor to have a $20 bill? What year does your boss think it is 1887?
