By thanks, my fellow americans - 18/04/2013 21:41 - United States - Woodlyn

Today, I was again turned down by a potential host family on a student exchange site. Their reasoning was basically that since I'm American, I might do something to endanger my health, get hurt, and then sue them over my own stupidity. FML

You shouldn't judge someone based upon their nationality.

Sorry they were asshats but it would have been misery living with such ignorant people. Hopefully you will find a super nice host family soon.

Sadly, that's what people think of Americans. We are a very litigious society!

They will regret it when OP is a millionaire.... One of these days, right OP?

Well in my country people tend to make jokes about that when they do stupid things and hurt themself. It's not fair to Op but i can't really blame the host family...

Report them to your exchange group, let them deal with it rather than the ACLU or a lawyer.

To be fair, they're not too far off; coming from an American.

I wonder if half the people siding with the host family have even been to America. I'm American, and I've never sued anyone. I don't know anyone who has.

I have been to the US many times. And i know about Mcdonalds being sueed because people ate 3 meals a day there and got fat. The coffee companies that had coffee that was too hot and someone chugged it. Warning labels on large machinery because someone climbed in and got killed. Part of this may have to do with a larger population goves higher chance of stupidity but there are enough lawsuits to justify skepticism.

145 - I was at a museum in Ottawa & was looking at military aircraft. This 1950s plane had a warning label on it saying "DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF GUNS". So.. People in Canada in the 50s were stupid too Bad decisions aren't solely a 1 country problem.
