Today, I was at a Buddhist shrine and wanted to light a candle for my friend who's having a rough time, when I got stung by a bee. I spent the next hour with a swollen shoulder. How does karma work again? FML

Something about your actions in previous lives affecting your caste in this life. At least originally.

calyx was spot on: " No, that's not it at all. Karma is anything that keeps us attached to identifying the thoughts and feelings from our mind as the root of our self. It is this attachment to our own minds that keeps us "reincarnating" from moment to moment, out of the dead past into the living present rather than merely living eternally now. In this regard, so called good karma is just as much an impediment to realizing this truth as bad karma. There is no good and bad, only attached and detached. At least that's my understanding of it."

I think it's a sign that you are a good person, willing to sacrifice your comfort to make another person feel better.

Buddhist is a religion, smartass. Most people in Asia, INCLUDING INDIA, are of said religion. Tell your teacher he/she has failed you.

Lessee. You wanted to help your friend, but aren't willing to do any suffering for them? Yeah, I think karma is working fine...

Hmm, that sucks. When I get stung I swell up for two weeks. Last summer I was stung 5 times. Once on the face, once on the hand, and three times on my leg... I hate bees.

Buddha clearly is unaware of the existence of oppression, plague, famine, natural disasters or just generally how disease works. Being locked into a bad life doesn't change the fact that you may still be able to do something about it, but to claim that you deserve it if you fail is just outright cruel. Nobody is omnipotent, so they shouldn't be held to such expectations.
