As a former active duty soldier, I have a couple of things to say. First, the only thing being fought for is corporations' interests. Secondly, your boyfriend can choke on a dick.
I don't necessarily think people in the service should get special status, but sometimes they do. My dad was in the National Guard, and on his first deployment, his convoy ran over an IED and he suffered multiple injuries. My dad was just doing his job. He has mini strokes in his sleep now, and the fact that some pricks would even attempt to discredit that makes me sick. The service men and women that I know are the most humble people I know, who have not once demanded special treatment. OP's boyfriend was DRUNK. Sober, I'd hope, he would never say that. I respect all opinions, but having an opinion that disagrees with one idea is completely and utterly different than INSULTING said idea.
hey hey hey. Don't knock your National Guard mechanics OP, I'm one of em. and I've done my part, I served active, reserve, and the NG. I've even deployed. we mechanics have one of the most thankless jobs in the army in general. if your husband is just a deuche trying to mooch with his status then fine but if he's actually done stuff like deploy or keeps his unit squared away maintenance wise and actually does high speed shit, then cut him slack. NG soldiers work harder than even I realized when coming off active duty. not only do we protect the country but if any natural disaster or terrible whatever happens, we get called for our state. and my unit is constantly training and I'm constantly having to fix this or that during drill. being a drunk ass isn't cool but don't knock the mechanics in the NG.
He's a shame
no YOU are!! show some reaspect!!!
I'm a mechanic for the national guard and I'm a shitfuck too.
While your boyfriend's behavior was ridiculous, a mechanic, or any other non-combat position for that matter, is just as valuable as a soldier. Show respect for them, too. This FML is highly insulting to those in non-combat.
The national guard is in fact part of the military, so he could get a military discount..but not a free meal and def not free alcohol lol
That wasn't right for him to expect that. However I wouldn't put down what he does. I am an active duty aerospace mechanic and know that an integral part of any military is a mechanic. If planes don't get fixed bombs, medicine, food, munitions etc do not get to our brethren. That goes with trucks, tanks, and cars. Everyone is important in there job even if they are not dodging bullets all the time.

Considering you have to put up with that kind of embarrassment, I hope they DID give you a free meal.
I think you misread. No one is talking about a free medal. Meal*
