He never tried it and magically knew he was allergic?
If your boss did in fact know about the allergies, he CERTAINLY should have told you. Major fail on his part if that's the case, seeing as chocolate is such a common treat/"reward" for little ones. Nonetheless, you should honestly be more careful in the future. It's entirely possible the boss didn't know - after all, I know many people who won't allow their kids to have chocolate or nuts when they are young, because allergies can be more threatening at younger ages. ESPECIALLY with nuts and chocolate, always ask if they like it/eat it somewhat regularly. If they've never had it, then it is not your place to force it on them. Some people are being somewhat aggressive towards you, and unnecessarily so - you're not a bad person. But certainly you should learn from this mistake - food allergies are no joke.
why so many YDIs? i don't understand at all. How would the OP know that the kid is allergic?
i gotta say...even if the kid wasn't allergic...dick move. knowing that most kids go ******* nuts for chocolate and his kids hadn't experienced it, and were content without it, you decide to introduce it to them. as someone who has grown up overweight and gotten healthy, i wouldn't give children that don't know how delicious something is the chance to eat it. they don't know chocolate, and ignorance is bliss sometimes. it is a fairly innocent mistake though, and im not saying you deserved that, or that the little kid deserved it, but try to think about the consequences of seemingly nice gestures.
the OP said the youngest hadn't tried it... I'm guessing the allergy was why... no mention of the oldest... so i'm guessing he/she did eat it
the parents should of told you his allergies.
FYL because your boss didn't tell you about the kid's allergies (assuming the boss knew of them). YDI for not stopping to think about the reason why the kid hadn't ever had chocolate and didn't want any. Even if the kid wasn't allergic, it could have been that his parents didn't want him eating "junk food" and therefore never had any. If this was the case, it wouldn't be your place to go against what the parents want. Next time, think before you act.
I can't believe so many people said YDI. You weren't aware of the allergy, and you were just opening the kid's world up a bit. It's definitely the parent's responsibility to inform anyone looking after their children of medical conditions the kids may have. Terribly inconvenient that it also happened to be your boss's kids you were looking after. Hope the kid's ok!
