OP here! Just to clarify, I didn't intentionally antagonize him and he didn't intentionally bite me. I was playing with my neighbor's retired therapy dog, and whilst trying to pull a toy from his mouth, he chomped down on my finger. It was most definitely an accident, and though it hurt like hell, we have forgiven each other and we're friends again. And I've learned my lesson about watching my fingers while playing with a dog.

did you pet it with out asking? wjat kind of therapy dog because it could also be trained to protect. you really arent suppose to pet them
Therapy dogs are dogs to help people with strong anxiety deal with stressful situations, such as agoraphobes going out into public on their own, long term hospitalees, etc: IIRC they don't receive any special training beyond obedience and are primarily selected for a calm disposition and being well socialized. They most certainly should NOT be guard or attack trained, if they are being used as a therapy dog, since they are working with people who may give nervous signals that tends to make dogs uneasy.
There is a huge difference between therapy dogs and service dogs: therapy dogs are companion animals to deal with high stress and anxiety, whereas service dogs are highly trained to actively help less able individuals navigate their daily life. Therapy dogs are not specially trained, but are generally selected for personality, since they need to be a comforting personality for someone who is likely to be the less emotionally stable part of the pair. For people who need therapy animals to function, they can be a godsend: some people who cannot do their daily routine without a friend or relative with them find they can live normally with one of these animals. Unfortunately, that means some people DO game the system, but frankly the people who need them the most will also be among the ones least equipped to deal with the objection of a store or restaurant.
Did you antagonize it?

I'm glad ot was nothing serious.
I've had that happen before. I screamed and my dog at the time tried comforting by licking the finger she chomped on earlier
So, how's the dog's therapy going?

Was the dog having a ruff day? I'll see myself out
Was it from horse playing with the pup, or antagonizing it (with or without provoking it)? Huge difference
