Today, I was called an 'unhelpful little bitch' by a customer, after I informed her that we couldn't order a pair of shoes she wanted from the company in her size because it's a discontinued model. This little tirade continued for another few minutes, with her insulting me and my intelligence. FML

Well, you can get mad at store policy if store policy is stupid... but I've only ever come across one stupid policy and I didn't feel the need to abuse the poor cashier who had to explain it to my disappointed self. I think some customers think store employees are some kind of robot drone, rather than people.

Or that store employees have some secret direct connection to corporate that allows us to change things.

And that yelling, screaming and namecalling makes the employee more likely to use that secret link. I've never even worked retail, I've just watched these people whilst in queues and stuff. I'd probably have a breakdown within my first week.

I think a lot of customers think the sales people are lazy liars and if they kick up enough of a fuss, the sales person will get their lazy ass in gear, go to the stock room and pull out what they want. When I was in college I worked retail and a lot of women were convinced we had more merchandise in the stockroom than on the floor and that I was just too lazy to go get something for them. The truth was, it wasn't there. The stockroom was empty except for supplies and damaged goods waiting for authorization to be returned to the vendor. But most of them didn't believe that; they were sure all the 'good stuff' was hidden away and if they made a big enough scene, we'd haul it out for them. I bet this nasty woman thought the OP was just too lazy to place the order and that if she threw a big snit fit, the OP would relent and say "All right already! I'll get you the shoes!"

I don't care what job you work. you don't have to put up with that. you should have walked away and called a manager to deal with her. I've worked retail and i've had to do that a few times.

Just be straight up with her. "Hey beezy, sorry I can't get you your shoes. I just work for the company, I didn't discontinue them, sorry." don't let anyone treat you that even while working.
