every woman should know how to change a tire and keep a spare in her trunk. it's just good sense nowadays. my mom once made me change my own tire by myself while she and my brother stood there and watched, just to make sure i could do it if i ever got stranded.
My dad made me do that before he'd let me get my license, many, many years ago. Really, people, if you don't want to learn to change a tire, either get some type of roadside assistance coverage (AAA, something through your insurance company, etc.) or buy a can of Fix-a-Flat, at least.
If you're driving through a town with a garage, it's hardly the middle of nowhere. o.O
This was a beautifully written FML. I can totally empathize--I once popped a tire near my school on a weekend and pulled into the school parking lot, only to find that my cell had died, and there was no one inside the school to call. So I replaced the tire myself. It didn't take very long. And considering how out of shape I am, I think anyone is capable of changing their own tire if I can.

break glass, pick up phone!
Obviously the guy would've called someone eventually, but it's the ridiculous cruel irony of this that makes it an FML. He's stuck in the middle of nowhere, finds the only auto shop there is, and the number they post to call in an emergency is the phone in the shop, where nobody happens to be because they closed early. FMLs don't have to be unsolvable... I generally find that they're one of those "Oh, come ON" moments that we all have to deal with sometimes.
