Today, I was giving an anti-drugs speech to a group of ninth graders. I got onto the topic of trafficking from problem countries and asked a student to point out Mexico City on a map. He hesitated a few seconds before pointing at Canada. What the hell has the education system come to? FML

Our future looks prosperous...

*facepalm* unfortunately, some kids just aren't taught/don't care. It's sad though =/

Omg! Mexico and Canada are two different size and so easy to differentiate. It's a sad thing that he assumed the latter as Canada.

Gotta say yes it appears that this country is going to go down hill pretty badly in the not to distant future i mean i remember actually working in school to get straight a's now from what im hearing most of the juniors/seniors just watch movies and stuff... Pretty sad

As a junior in high school I see stuff like this semi-often (I'm in advanced classes) but my father is also a teacher for remedial math. Our education system is surrounded by red tape making everything much more difficult than it needs to be. Also our teachers do not have the ability to enforce anything. They can not even take away students cell phones because it is an "infringement of their privacy". Ultimately the parents have instilled in children that there is no need to give an effort at anything because everything will be provided for you. Parents rarely punish their children instead they cave in and give them what they want. This is what is destroying Americas future.

OP, why did you have to ask in the first place? Didn't you know where it was?

Not surprised. Someone once told me that she met someone who does not even know Canada existed.. and that person asked her if Canada was a state in the United States. Seriously though? It is not like Mexico is even a small unknown city or country.

Except Uncle_Ben that I'm not stupid enough to run for president and I hate Bush's policies. We need less government control/regulation and we need to have parents that take actual responsibility for their children. We also need people who won't try to sue anyone for any reason at all. That just leads to more fear and inaction. Honestly I don't care what people think about me because it won't change how I feel or how I act.

It's going to get worse. Did you know the DARE program is linked to increased drug use? You've probably inspired a future drug mule.

Not just any drug use, irresponsible drug use, because all these kids are being told is "Don't Do It". **** DARE. I think what should be addressed is why kids feel the need to do drugs in the first place. If it's to get away from depression, feelings of confusion, or to make friends, those are the issues that need to be tackled - drug use is just a symptom.
