It was their mistake. You should get to keep it.
Unless someone actually told OP it was a raise I'm pretty sure they can recoup a clerical error. Just like you can recoup funds or have it credited to your account when you accidentally make an overpayment.
There are laws against that! Go to the labour board as u do not have to pay that back!
*raises hand* HR person here (US anyway). They definitely can't do that. They can drop your pay back down, but they can't take back the incorrect wages. If you are in the US you can contact the Dept. of Labor and complain or ask for anonymous advice on the matter.
Yeah, this is pretty much my experience as well. I also see several comments of people saying it happened to them too, including government jobs. People, just because they do it, doesn't mean it's legal. Most people just don't dare protest, so they'll pay up regardless. This is exactly what most companies, government included, are hoping for. Never just roll over and die, always ask legal advice first.
I did a little research and they can definitely recoup their overpayments. But they have to file with the department of labor to do so. They CANNOT just scratch back the cash.
If this happened to me I would definitely look for a new job.
They can't just dock it from your next paycheck?
I do not believe they can legally do that. I would consult an attorney about this.

I don't think they can do that...
Don't give it back! Finders keepers
