What an asshole!
**** that company. Those are awful people.
I certainly don't think anyone deserves to have cancer, or to be told that someone thought they would die. But I think OP is exaggerating about being *promised* a job. I highly doubt the boss said "This job is yours once you recover". It was probably more like "You have great qualifications, we like you, once you are feeling better and ready to work we would love to talk to you again." OP may have also lead them to believe the treatment would be done in only a few months (not that OP could have known any better, cancer is so unpredictable). But eventually as time went on and OP was not able to work yet, the company had to fill an open position. If the boss actually did say "I didn't think you would survive" he probably meant it in the spirit of "as more time went on, we weren't sure how your health was going to turn out, so we had to go ahead and hire someone else". Also, I don't think the boss meant he thought OP wouldn't survive when the job was initially discussed, but rather several months later after lack of communication from OP. I would consider it nothing more than a foot in mouth moment for the boss. Rude? Yes. But I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the boss is an absolute jerk. OP shouldn't expect a business to put something on hold for 2 years while they take care of personal issues.
#159, you're missing the point. The boss made the offer because he hoped OP would not survive to call him on it. Utterly cold and calculating.
Actually, I was promised the job. "I can't let ya work while going through chemo, but no matter how long it takes, when your treatment is over, you have this job. I promise ya." was his words. We stayed in contact during my treatment, and once I started to recover and he learned of it, he stopped returning my texts and calls. After the treatment finished, I went to see him in person, and his exact words were: "Let's be honest, you had like no chance of surviving, and I was just trying to be nice. You really think I'm going to hire some sickly guy like you?" I'm paraphrasing, but not by much.
Whoa, that's..... It's not even cold anymore, it's calculating. So sorry, OP
What a crappy thing to say to someone. Sorry OP, and I'm glad you beat cancer!
That's ****** up. So sorry
What kind of cold son of a bitch do you need to be to choose YDI on this one? Shame on all of you assholes. OP, I am glad your treatment worked and don't worry. There'll be other opportunities in your future.

It hurts just reading this.
What an extraordinarily awful person. You deserve so much better than that.
