Today, I was visiting family in Oregon. I did not know it was illegal to pump your own gas; the cops were involved. FML

Seems odd to me that the worker would call the police before just letting you know. Unless they were passing by of course.

Also, this went into effect because in the beginning, there was much more to it then there is now, and Oregon just decided to keep this law. It has nothing to do with theift, it is about safety.

I live in Canada and we have Full Serve and Self Serve gas stations. You could still pump your own gas at a full serve, although no one would cuz that's what the gas attendants get paid for. That's one of the craziest laws I've ever heard!

I've seen people try that the workers always laugh and explain, it happens all the time, the surrounding states pump their own gas, including ten-minutes-away-Washington. I'm calling BS on this one. Unless you are a crazy f-er and threw a fit or something??? Lol The law making it illegal to pump gas was intended to create more jobs. It does :)

I grew up in oregon. I still live there. It's illegal because of gas theft AND because since the whole state uses this system, letting people pump their own gas would cost thousands of jobs.
