By yes, yes it does :( - 30/04/2014 21:11 - United States

Today, I was waiting on a Canadian tourist at work, and he bought some of the most expensive stuff on the menu. I was excited about maybe getting a big tip, so I casually said that in the USA, waiters make most of our money off tips. The guy just snorted, "Sucks to be American, eh?!" and left. FML

That's basically asking for a tip. What a way to treat customers.

You were fishing for it but he was being a dick. I voted both.

I can see how op thought the Canadian might not know about the customary tipping in America and that the average server makes 2.13 an hour.

Let's see people claim Canada is full of nice people now.

I hate the "tip" requirement when eating out. I feel I am paying for the for the product and service with the purchase price. If that price doesn't cover all expenses of the restaurant, the owner has failed at simple math. If I buy a car, which involves a service/sales person, I don't pay them hundreds of dollars as a percentage of the sale. It's just the restaurant owners that are transferring their costs from their bottom line to the customers, then help perpetuate the problem by posting signs about tips not included, etc. That being said, I will tip good service....but not at a percentage. A server is involved with my order for maybe 10 minutes. If I tip a flat $5.00, that works out to $30.00 per hour. I don't make $30.00 per hour....not many do. I know it doesn't work out that way all the time, but I'm annoyed about always hearing the woes and trials of living on a servers wages with the expectation the customer is going to top up their salaries. The system needs to change and pay proper wages to eliminate the "need" for tips. Then tipping can be what it is supposed to be... a reward for a job well done.

When you tip you're paying for the service not the food, in most of the world the tip is included at the bottom and it's always a percent. If you don't want to tip then don't go to a restaurant where someone is "waiting" on you hand and foot to your every need, go to a fast food place get a $1 burger and not have to tip.

First, OP you may have offended the guy by implying that he doesn't know American customs. I'm sure most average Canadians are aware of American social norms. Second, 34.. That employee is providing YOU with a service, the opportunity to enjoy your meal without having to worry about cleaning up when you are done or even refilling your drink. Quit trying to justify being cheap and rude- you know darn well that is how waiters get paid. Majority of those workers, if given their first choice, would not be working that job. But they have to take what they can to pay their bills.

Whats the difference between a Canadian and a canoe? Canoes tip.

what!!wait!!! americans restaurants dont pay their waiters???

honestly, did you really think the customer didn't know that? its the same in Canada...

I love that the OP thinks there is such a huge lifestyle gap between Canada and the US that she needs to point out something very obvious. Hell, Canadian waiters and waitresses make most of THEIR money off tips too genius. If you said this to me I would've walked out without tipping you too. Nothing worse than a server practically begging for your money to ruin a nice meal out. You deserved it, and are a sad human being for thinking so low of a country literally a few feet away from yours that you think you need to explain things to him like he's stupid.
