While it was wrong for him not to tip you you were also very unprofessional for asking for a tip
"while it was wrong" you do realize tiping is not expected at all outside of US so your assessment of "wrong" has no valid basis.
It was right for him not to tip if he was insulted. It was wrong for him not to complain to the manager.
#48: actually tips ARE expected (though not obligatory) in Canada. However as mentioned, asking for a tip is considered rude and unprofessional and many people won't leave a tip if you do. One of my friends is a very generous tipper (20-25%), but if the waiter is all in her face about the tip, she won't leave anything.
If you probably waited and didn't say anything, he probably would've tipped you. But FYL because you did all that work and didn't get anything for it.
Agree! Especially because in Canada, at least where I'm from, tipping is a standard custom.
Totally deserve that one OP. Never ever fish for a tip. Give them good service to prove you deserve it. I understand tips are majority of your income but to essentially demand it is bullshit
I like to leave a rip if the service is good enough. But if they are fishing/asking for a tip they will get nothing. Do your job and most people will leave a tip. But don't be an idiot and ask for it. Tips ARE optional.
Exactly! Earn the tip! I have no problem tipping 20% or better for good service. And I am Canadian. So it's not mandatory up there. But you bust your ass you deserve a tip!
I thought Canadians were supposed to be super nice
Regardless, hinting for a tip is still tacky.
We are! We just don't like being pressured to give a big tip. Sometimes if you act like a dick, we act like dicks back.
We're nice; we're not doormats.
They are :) we don't like being ASKED for tips though, just like any normal person
He's right though. It does suck to be an American. Especially one who's under middle class. We need a revolution.
I think you mean it's AWESOME to be an American. *Throws rifle over shoulder, mounts buffalo, and rides off into the sunset*
@93 This is my new favorite comment of the day.
Canadians (and most of the western world) are well aware that you make a living off of tips- You don't need to tell them. Fishing for tips is a sure-fire way to ensure you don't get one. I'd hazard a guess that if you hadn't said anything about it, he probably would have tipped you. YDI
Exactly. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. It's the same in Canada, he got turned off by you asking for a bigger tip.
I usually get turned on when asked for a bigger tip...
I usually turn her on by saying 'C'mon. Just the tip!'
I probably wouldn't have tipped either or very little of my waiter said something like that trying to pressure me into tipping
He may have given you a good tip if you just didn't bring it up and almost expect that he give you a huge tip.
I work in restaurants too (albeit in the uk), I know how tough the job can be and I know how crap American servers have it - still wouldn't tip someone fishing. It's the height of bad manners. YDI.

That's basically asking for a tip. What a way to treat customers.
You were fishing for it but he was being a dick. I voted both.
