Then file a grievance with your former employer - cite the policy adn the fact that you're supposed to tell customeres that. Provided you said something like, "I'm sorry but it's our company policy to etc." and followed up with, "You're absolutely right, you shouldn't have to be told that, I'll get a manager." (and then get the manager immediately) would have helped. It's not your fault but ti seems like you could have been more polite to the man and maybe your manager was looking for any dumb reason to fire you anyway and saw it as a chance.
There has to be more to the story. If you were rude to the customer that's probably why you got fired. But if you weren't and you were just doing your job, you could sue the company for wrongful termination. They can't fire you for doing your job. Which is why I tend to believe this isn't the whole story. But still. FYL.
An easy explanation is that the company policies are inconsistent. 1) "Don't let customers bring in drinks." 2) "The customer is always right." It will just depend on which manager you get, what their mood is that day... completely arbitrary.
i don't think its possible to vote YDI for this 1..? that really does suck, i feel your pain i work as a service clerk (or cart boy if you prefer) and people do this all the time. I may have the shittiest job and only be 15 years old, but the way i am treated is simply rude. For example, one day a man parked his car infront of the ramp customers and i use to get our carts/groceries from the store to the parkinglot or vice versa in my case. Soooo i politly asked him to move his car up just enough so he isnt blocking the ramp. He began telling me he was waiting for his wife to come out so they could just put their groceries away there and i continued to say that he was blocking myself and other customers (and having 5-10 carts with me, going up the lip isnt an option) He then started yelling and screaming at me about how the customer is always right and that he will only take 2 seconds. Not wanting to lose my job i stopped argueing... 15 minutes later i finally got 1 load of cart into the store. FML
if this actually happened, you have no logical choice but to sue them
Wow so there's a rule for getting fired. That's lame. Well always kill them with kindness even if they are a total jerk cause it'll always say more abt the other person. Oh wells, better luck next time buddy.
Why does everyone on this site get fired for stupid trivial things? You got fired for enforcing the restaurant's rules? Yeah...I believe you.

That sucks. I can't believe you got fired for following company policy.
I work in retail, so I know your pain when you have a horrible customer. They threaten you and try to make you feel like a peasant. All you have to do is wait until your shift ends to do something. Nothing says "owned" better than a flat tire.
