Today, I was walking down the street when a "homeless" man asked for money. I gave him a dollar and he got up and called his friend on an iPhone. FML

Ok to clear things up, I was walking home and he asked for money. He looked, and even SMELLED like a homeless person. Sure enough, I gave him money and all of a sudden he got up and started walking and I saw him take out an iPhone 5 and call his friend. I heard him say, "Lol dude it worked!" Sorry I wrote so much ._. And no he was NOT really homeless

Should have taken your dollar back! What a pan handling dick. At least you tried doing the right thing, OP.

At least you were being a decent person. But that sucks that he stole your money

This is the reason people judge the homeless. It is really hard to tell nowadays if they are for real or not... I still give though. This situation would have pissed me right off.

That is why I only give food to people that are "begging".

having a decent phone doesn't mean a person doesn't need money, for all you know, their aunt pays for it, or they could have got it before they were homeless and struggle to keep it so that they can finder job. homeless people having cell phones is not a sign that they don't really need help. yes, there are assholes that will take advantage of you, but don't judge before you know the story. Soo not fml worthy.

Okay i think some of you need to realize that being homeless/poor doesn't necessarily mean you don't have possessions. When I was made homeless at 17 I still had a lot of my fathers possessions including a PS3, some TV's, and gold jewelry. I was able to keep most of mine and my fathers things at a family members house until i got a place of my own. You say he should sell that phone but then what? He'd get a few hundred dollars but now he doesn't have a phone and if you are jobless you would want a way for employers to contact you. Maybe it's not his but a friend is letting him use it? Maybe he just became homeless and needed a quick buck for some food? People are so quick to judge others without knowing their story but I'm sure if you found yourself in an unfortunate situation you wouldn't want people to look down on you because of something so insignificant. If you don't know what it's like to have to beg for money I don't think you have room to judge, people can find themselves in all sorts of situations that may not make sense to a stranger and I honestly don't think anyone who didn't need to would beg. It's humiliating, especially when people like you all judge beggars without knowing why they are holding their hand out in the first place.

Yeah if you dont have internet or the very least a phone number you aren't getting a job and therefore will remain homeless. I would sell my extra clothes and my hair before I sold my only means of communication. Panhandling doesnt always imply homelessness either, you can have a place to live but not have a penny to your name and need money to feed yourself or take the bus, its hard to judge.

Yeah, I've been unemployed for a while and my savings are only going to last me about until the end of the year. I've got some stuff I can sell off, but not much, and I agree that my phone would be the LAST ******* thing. Shit, if it's an older-model iPhone he might have gotten it for free for signing up for a contract! You absolutely HAVE TO have an email address and phone number to find a job. HAVE. TO. If you're near a library with decent internet access, you can use theirs sometimes, but it will only make do for so long. You have no ******* idea what that guy's life is like. I hope he gets on his feet soon, and I hope you never find yourself in the same position.

Well either he had it before his life turned upside down as some commenter above pointed out, or another possibility is that he may have found it, kept it, and just called a number he might have remembered. If he did find it somewhere it is a possibility that he just kept it as his own. Or he's an ass who has something but is making the truly homeless and poor look worse than they already are by pretending he's in that bad of a shape that He has to beg for money.

Google "cell phones for homeless". It's not that hard to understand that many programs exist that provide cell phones for low-income and homeless. I haven't heard of one that provides an iPhone but I'm not going to assume that one doesn't exist either.

to all the people saying he could have had it before his life went to crap, BULL SHIT. Maybe if he wasn't spending his money on needlessly crap phones that are WAAAAAY overpriced simply because they have the apple symbol on them, he wouldn't be homeless. People do this crap and act like they need a phone then they get the best thing on the market. Get what you can afford and need, not what you want.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe, not all people that have expensive stuff aren't "hipsters", rub it in people's faces, aren't assholes, etc.?

I have an iPhone 4 that I got for FREE, by renewing my contract on my phone plan. The phone I had before? An iPhone 3GS that was obtained the same exact way. If you're paying a phone bill, and offer you a better phone, you'd either be overly nostalgic or just stupid to not take it.

You do realize that the cost of the phone is built into your plan/ contract, right? It's not really "free" in the true sense of the word.
