Today, I was walking down the street when a "homeless" man asked for money. I gave him a dollar and he got up and called his friend on an iPhone. FML

Kaka_Karrot_Kake tells us more.

Ok to clear things up, I was walking home and he asked for money. He looked, and even SMELLED like a homeless person. Sure enough, I gave him money and all of a sudden he got up and started walking and I saw him take out an iPhone 5 and call his friend. I heard him say, "Lol dude it worked!" Sorry I wrote so much ._. And no he was NOT really homeless

Should have taken your dollar back! What a pan handling dick. At least you tried doing the right thing, OP.

At least you were being a decent person. But that sucks that he stole your money

Do you expect everyone to sell their phones when they lose their home? Smartphones are pretty important these days, especially if you don't have a computer and especially now that many charities have shut down or had to limit services and are thus harder to access. The internet becomes one of the top ways to find information on what's available to even to make appointments, and if you're trying to find a job or a new place to live you need a contact phone number. I was nearly homeless earlier this year, and guess what? I owned a tablet AND a computer! I guess I'd have sold one if I was really desperate but the resale price is often not enough to be worth it

I workeed at a soup kitchen where everyone had acc iPhone...

Thats why I have no sympathy for the homeless.

A lot of people who pan handle are not actually homeless. They just pretend to be to get free cash.

And you're out a dollar. A dollar. Mister homeless iPhone scam artist conned you out of your life's savings of 100 cents. Also, he could well be homeless, might just be that he's couch surfing while he tries desperately to get a new place. Having a cell phone would be a huge benefit to that search, because if there's no way to contact you...

I've seem homeless people pop out "SQUARES" when you say you don't have cash just a card so you CAN give them money somehow. It does suck that he has a nice phone for not having any money though.

This is why I no longer give people money... People have learned they can make more money panhandling then getting a job. If they were really desperate they could always go to a homeless shelter.

I don't give to people like because they could easily find shelters or charities that I would gladly give to

He can sell the iPhone instead of asking for money. If you're homeless, you don't need an iPhone.

And just how would one be available for job offers without a phone? Or are homeless people just supposed to remain homeless for the rest of their lives?

Considering the price for an iPhone, I'm sure there are much MUCH more cheaper phones out there.

The iPhone I used to have was free. Can't get much cheaper than that...

I notice how nobody here seems to realize he could have had the phone before losing everything, and he might not even have a service plan for it anymore. He could be using the McDonalds Wi-Fi to be making a call through Google Plus or Skype, or any other app. Homeless does not mean you have to give up your only link to the digital world - the world most modern employers expect you to be connected to.
