Today, I was working at a shoe store and was helping a dude try on shoes. He looked like trouble and I wanted to finish with him. When he finally picked his shoes, he abruptly stood up and ran out of the store with the shoes on. The cost of them was deducted from my salary. $240. FML

there's no way he can deduct the cost of the shoes from your salary.....there is no way you can be held accountable for theft unless you were letting him try the shoes on right next to the exit of the store or w/e but even then, theft of store items should be reported and should be covered by the stores insurance policy.....next time, dont wither so easily under your boss and stand up for yourself......

when you are not at work, get a friend to have the boss wait on him. get the most expensive pair of shoes and run off with them on.

What country is that legal in? Glad I live in the US, where that is not an issue.

if this is true, this is sooooo not fair!!! i suppose it is believable because my mate who works at a gas station had to pay for fuel when the car drove off without paying because she didnt read the license plates..even though there were cameras...so why couldnt it happen with shoes???

Either fake or you can sue your employer for it. How are you liable for someone else's criminal actions?

It is against the law for your boss to take the money out of your check.

That is totally illegal. Chasing that guy down could have resulted in him seriously hurting you. Your employer can't demand that you put yourself at risk like that, therefore, he can't charge you for not doing it. That is -totally- illegal! Confront him on that!

You moron, you should've ran after him, smacked him to the wall and made him eat YOUR shoes. xD

It is illegal for you to be charged for the stolen property. call your local Labor Board and ask them what to do about this. Let them know what happened and more than likely they will send a letter or soemthing for you to the management. you cna also contact a lawyer for free consultation. no doubt, this is not the first time this has happened at the company and may result in a huge lawsuit against the company--and even better, your job is not at risk or it will be considered retaliation if they fire you for whistleblowing. your employer should have a employee law poster somewhere with important numbers on it. if not, that's illegal. it must be somewhere visible to the employees, and not in a room where you are not allowed.
