Today, I went back to school after missing the first 2 weeks of the new school year. I got grilled in my first lesson by my teacher for "gallivanting around on holiday in some sunny place" when I should've been at school learning. My dad had died from liver cancer. FML

well tell that bitch why you missed the first 2 weeks! :/

This is probably one of those very rare instances where you could cuss out your teacher big time and get away with it... after you have explained to the head teacher that you father just died of course.

um how does one miss two weeks for a death? i just don't understand that really and the lack of communication is pretty fail right there im halfway, it is FYL but some of this is your fault, so YDI for not getting any work emailed or given by a friend

The time after a loved one's death is not a good time to be getting any serious work done. ESPECIALLY someone as close as a parent. There's a reason that most schools excuse absences for a death in the immediate family. You shouldn't have to be doing work. And I'd be surprised if the OP was emotionally stable enough to go back to school as soon as the funeral was over. For that matter, there could have been other things going on. I'm sure the extended family came down and that caused complications. If the OP is Jewish, they could very well have spent a week of that in sitting shiva.

#54 what you said is just dumb! They missed the first two weeks of that school semester so it's not like they knew what to do anyways! It could of been new material, and how are they suppose to get their work down without any books. I know for a fact that I won't be going to the school to get my stuff when someone as close to me as my dad dies, or will I be in the right mind (mentally) to sit there and do work that I probably have no idea how to do. maybe their school has the same classes 1st semester and 2nd semester, but it still new material. When my grandfather died, my sister got my stuff for me and I didn't even touch my school work. ( and for people that will say well your sister was able to go to school why not you, she's my half sister so no relation to my grandfather so she didnt really care, my dad made her get my stuff just in case.)

Yes, because she totally deserves it for greiving the death of her father. What kind of ignorant prick are you? I missed a month of my freshman year for something that wasn't nearly as bad as this, and none of my teachers bitched at me...

you shouldve slapped that teacher in the face

Sorry, but this teacher deserves no sympathy from anyone. #22, SHE could have pulled the op aside and asked HIM in private why he missed two weeks of school instead of opening her mouth and trying to embarrass him publicly. Getting angry, violent, or getting her fired is NOT going overboard. She doesn't deserve the courtesy of being told in private what happened to his father, since she didn't extend that courtesy to him. If she wants to hold a grudge against him for making her look like a jackass, well then sorry about her damn luck. If she does get fired though, then her grudge is a moot point since she's going to be too busy worrying about if and when she's going to get another job.

No school would fire her over something like that, and getting violent would absolutely be going overboard and probably get the OP in detention regardless of the cause. If the OP had just simply said "No actually, I was away because my dad died" the teacher is going to feel bad enough and look stupid in front of the class. I very much doubt the teacher being in the wrong and putting herself in a position to be so easily called out would really make the OP feel any worse about her dad.

Apparently you can't read either. There's this button called "reply" that you use of you want to reply to someone's comment. FYI, you're never going to get a job if you "spel lyk dis" on your resume. Good luck dumpster diving for food.

At least she probably feels like an ass now.

I hope you told her that to her face, then reported her.

I teach at a school in Gloucestershire and we have staff briefing every morning - this is exactly why. I'd say it's a failing on the part of the school as much as the individual teacher because they should have been informed.
