Today, I went into work and noticed one of my fellow colleagues had a large bunch of flowers on her desk. As soon as I saw her, I immediately said, "Happy Birthday!" Everyone went quiet. It wasn't her birthday; her father had died. FML

More like F you for making assumptions.

Nothing says party like black tulips and red roses.

You had good intentions. And I mean, think about it people, wouldn't you have assumed it was someone's birthday, too? I know I would have.

Oh please, like every single one of you who is saying "NEVER make assumptions" hasn't assumed something before. When my dad was sick and dying in the hospital, I started crying in class one day and my friend hugged me and said "Come on, it can't be that bad" which made me cry harder because it was that bad and she just assumed it was that my girlfriend and I broke up. That was on a Monday, and in a later class, I had to make up a test that was on Friday and I missed it because of my dad being sick. My teacher accused me of staying home because I wasn't ready for the test. Making a comment when you think you're being nice or helpful (like my friend) isn't really an issue, unless you're saying something accusingly or in a rude way (like my teacher) you're fine to assume, but yes, sometimes it will end up as an FML situation.

Duuuuuude!! That's so sad! YDI for not checking the flowers to see what the occassion was.

Ya I agree with 8 And 17 it's more likely that it's gonna be someones birthday than a death. There wasn't any way that they couldve known except if they had talked to them recently. Cmon.

Wow. It's hard to believe some people are old enough to work, yet can't figure out which "where" to use. You meant to say 'were'...right? Yeah, it was a wrong assumption but a lot of people makes the wrong assumption at some point in their life. Next time you'll know to ask them "Hey, is it your birthday?".
