Today, I went to a birthday party for my friend's daughter. I picked up a gift for the girl and another for her parents. I got the mother a cute little garden stone that read "What our children see in the world depends on what we show them." Later, I found out her daughter is blind. FML

I'm assuming that you didn't know her well enough to know she had a blind daughter... that plus the fact that the message is clearly figurative should get you off the hook loll just don't make a big scene about it with her and you should be fine :)

Personally, I find the phrase to be even more relevant when the daughter is blind.

its odd that your daughter didn't tell you her friend was blind. Im guessing maybe she's retarded?

Her friends daughter. Not her daughters friend. Who's the retarded one?

I agree with #1. #12, omg. Re-read the post, please.

Your heart was in the right place, and even though it may be a poor taste gift from a certain point of view, I'm sure the family accepted it in the spirit that it was given.

#11 - I agree... it means more to me personally if she IS blind.

it doesn't mean literally 'see'

I dont think that this would be offensive at all. I have a good friend that is blind and when you are someone or your child is someone who was born blind, it really isn't something that you think about very often. I'm sure that the mother didn't even think about it in that way, and if she did, she probably found it more encouraging than anything else to know that just because her child is blind does not mean she can't see the world's beauty. Also, I'm sure that if you didn't know the child was blind, the parents knew that you didn't know. I'm sure they are not offended at all.

completely agree with #11. it's even more meaningful because she's blind. as long as the daughter's gift wasn't a magic eye book or something, you're in the clear!

#17 took the words right out of my mouth. If I were a parent with a blind child and got that gift, it would be really special. In fact, in a way, that seems like it was written specifically for parents with blind children. However, I find it odd that you are good enough friends to go over for their child's birthday, but not well enough to know their child is blind.

aww... good thought, just bad luck i guess
