I absolutely hate it when someone thinks they have to sit right next to me (or stand) when there is plenty of room! I like my own personal space. I hate it at restaurants when people take the booth directly behind me when they majority of the place is empty, why exactly do they have to sit so close. People need to understand that lots of people like personal space, especially from strangers. There is a difference between sitting near, as in a few chair away, so that while there was no one else there you could talk if you both decided to by absolutely no reason at all to sit down in the chair right next to them if you two were the only two there. Leave some space.
She's not in a restaurant with strangers. She's in a conference with someone she's probably going to need to speak to that day. I like my personal space as much as the next person but that doesn't mean I'm going to avoid someone I'm going to have to interact with for the rest of the day by starting out sitting on the other side of the room, or even a few seats away.
Still, it's awfully strange to choose a seat right next to the only person in the room when there are a whole room full of empty seats. The OP should have chosen to sit a couple rows away at the least, out of courtesy (and to avoid appearing to be a creeper).
Did you try to start some conversation with her, or just sit down and... sit there? I'm leaning towards YDI.
There's a place downtown, where the freaks all come around, it's a hole in the wall, it's a dirty free for all..
are you fat, ugly or smelly? if no then maybe se just didn't want to seem like a weirdo for sitting next to you considerig your the only one in the room.

Why did you sit right beside her if you were the only two there in the first place? You probably creeped her the **** out.
Maybe it's just cause I'm British but personally I'd do the same. Why did you feel you had to sit right beside her? She probably just doesn't like strangers in her personal space. I highly doubt it was anything to do with you.
