I brush and floss my teeth religiously, almost never drink coffee/tea/pop, and have never smoked or chewed tobacco. But I still have yellow teeth (I've had them all my life, actually). So sometimes it's genetic, and you can't do anything about it. I don't know what it is in the OP's case, but everyone should stop jumping to conclusions. Some of these comments were totally uncalled for.
Your dentist should have asked if you were a smoker or not for his file due to various reasons (like it effects bleeding, raises risk for anaesthetic etc.) and not just assummed this. He is rude but you shouldn't have let it be a long speech. Next time just say shut up A*Hole I pay - you work for me!
Oral hygiene works magic. BRUSH YOUR TEETH!! or try whitening mouth wash or strips.
Oh, you can rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide before brushing your teeth... (DO NOT SWALLOW)
