Today, I woke up with pink eye. My mom tried to help by putting drops in. It started burning like hell; she didn't understand why. It turns out she was putting ear drops in my eye. FML

If this ever happens again, quickly put some eye drops in your ears.

Niceeeeee, that would be why you read the label before you try and use something... FYL OP hope you feel better.

What? No they're not. I believe eye (opthalmic) drops CAN be used in ears for some purposes, but ear (otic) drops are NOT supposed to go into the eye. I'm not even sure why you'd think they're the same thing... different drugs for different ailments and parts of the body, y'know? This is supposed to be a reply to #63, I'm on a cruddy work computer.

Ear drops are nothing like eye drops. Differences include: Acidity of the medicine. If you're going to put it in your ear, it doesn't matter as much. However, in the eye It hurts like hell and may cause issues. The acidity can also change what sort of preservatives are used, which affects whether to use it in the eye or ear. Size of the medicine particles. When in a suspension, particles for the eye may be a bit smaller so that it doesn't feel as gritty when applied. Doesn't matter as much for the ear. Sterility. Putting something in the eye NEEDS TO BE STERILE. The ear? Meh. Not so much. Therefore, eye drops can be used in the ears (when approved by the manufacturer), but ear drops should NOT be used in the eyes.
