It's not that you got a text it's that you took your attention away from the road to read it that's the problem.
NO IT'S A TRAP
For all that pressed ydi he didnt say he read the message maybe the sound or phone vibration got him out of focus
How would be have known what he mom said if he didn't read it?
Maybe they read the text after the accident happened?
Wrecking your car because your phone made noises is a terrible excuse, though, and would warrant me, if I had any authority over you, to force you to redo your driving test. If a mildly-loud, unexpected sound makes you crash your car, then you don't belong on the road. Imagine someone honks their horn to warn you of an obstacle on the road and you crash right into the next pedestrian. Police/ambulance sirens suddenly appear, goodbye fire hydrant next to the sidewalk. Random stranger yells because he likes your car, say hello to the new drive-in at the pet shop.
If a phone vibrating is enough to cause someone to someone wreck their car, they probably shouldn't be driving anyway
Be easy on him, guys. Sometimes when I turn my radio on it surprises me so much i actually swerve off the road. It happens when the car starts up, too. That sound is really startling.
If you're the kind of person who is so easily started that a phone ringing or a radio turning on is enough to make you swerve and/or crash, then you shouldn't be driving at all. Put yourself at risk all you want but you have no right to put other people at risk, which is what you're doing every time you drive. If driving really is that important to you, then maybe get some therapy to help you calm down and gain control over your body. But honestly, most people are able to be startled without having disastrous consequences.
******* idiot! You completely deserve it!
Seriously?
YDI for checking your text while driving. But nonetheless do I hope that you're OK.
Maybe OP died and is posting this from hell...
You're trying too hard, 32.
the irony always gets me
I hope you didn't go off on your mom for that. she's the one that sent the text but you chose to try and read it.
Totally your fault. Your mom wasn't forcing you to look at it. Is it really so difficult to wait until you've stopped to read a damn text? I have no sympathy for people like you. You were putting other people's lives in danger.
Its been kinda said already but you didn't wreck your car because your mom texted you. You wrecked it because you checked your phone and got detracted.
distracted... not detracted

Ironic, but still- you were the one still checking your phone. Next time just put it in "Do Not Disturb" mode.
YDI. You shouldn't have looked at the text in the first place! Get a Bluetooth and use it for calls to be safe. On some phones you can even make texts and have it read you new texts. But in no situation is it ok to look at your phone or read texts while you're driving! If you can't use a Bluetooth then pull over to touch your phone. Better safe than sorry.
