I'm guessing the friend didn't remember who gave it to them for their birthday and thought the OP would like it since they clearly never even wore it. It does suck what happened, but I think ending the friendship could be harsh. I had a friend in school who could never afford to get me bday gifts, but would try to get me to take something of theirs they thought I would like because they felt bad about it. I just explained that I didn't need anything but that It was very considerate.
At least you got a present! I don't see the problem
