Today, it's my birthday. Today is also the day my grandma died, six years ago. Since then, I get to sit through any sort of attempted celebration while my mom sobs and drinks herself into a stupor in the background. FML

Try Turning it into a celebration of your grandmas life as well?

I really don't even know what to say to this. That's rough OP. I hope it gets better with more time.

When I was born, my grandma died ....and this year, my boyfriend's father died few days earliear but the funeral was on my birthday. So...I totally understand how you feel. Anyway...happy birthday

I'm really sorry about your grandma. Just remember everyone grieves their own way. Perhaps you could try celebrating a few days before (or after) your actual birthday? Or, if you're old enough, maybe you could go out with a friend or two. Hang in there, OP, and good luck.

Sounds like a good excuse not to buy you a birthday present.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but my grandma died 3 years ago from cancer and year anniversaries of her death dont bring sadness. We know she'd want us to be happy. And I think your grandma would like for your mom to stop grieving and celebrate your birthday.

Tell your mom this is supposed to be a happy day and that she's letting you down by acting this way. No caring parent in the world would let their child feel like crap on thier birthday. I don't care if her mother died or not. That was three years ago. Take care of your children. YMS!

I don't understand why people are saying she deserves it and are thumbing people down for having similar things happen to them. I feel for OP and for everyone else who has had something like this happen.

Yeah! I've been there! I feel for OP!

Lol @ the thought of a bunch of people around a cake singing Happy Birthday while a drunk woman sits in a dark corner with a bottle of booze.

Celebrate your new year while celebrating Grandma's great years. Cheer up your mother with good memories of maybe both you and grandma?
