Today, it's my birthday. Today is also the day my grandma died, six years ago. Since then, I get to sit through any sort of attempted celebration while my mom sobs and drinks herself into a stupor in the background. FML

Today, my family is still telling me to "get over" the death of my great aunt. The great aunt who always gave the most wonderful birthday gifts, and was overall one of the most pleasant people I've ever met, and I'm NOT allowed to be sad that she's gone. Did I mention she died on my birthday? FML

Today, it's a day before my birthday and I will be turning 14. My grandma died 5 days ago and in Indian culture you aren’t supposed to celebrate for 16 days after a loved one dies. I have dietary restrictions too and can’t eat eggs because of her death, which means I basically can’t have any sweets. FML

Today, I took a day off from work for a doctor's appointment. It ended up taking a lot longer than I expected, because while I was on my way, my mom called to inform me that my great aunt passed away this morning. As a result, I showed up extremely late and was berated. And the worst part? It's my birthday. FML

The Mom needs to grow the hell up. Sheesh. I lost my Father whom I loved very much but I don't go around bawling about it. It's called life. Learn to deal with it. This lady sounds exactly like my GF.

Of course she had nothing to do with her grandma dying on her birthday, but she could choose to celebrate her birthday the day before or the day after in deference to her mother's feelings.

You must have a lot of patience if six years of trying to celebrate with a sobbing drunk hasn't driven you to go elsewhere yet. You deserve to be happy on your birthday, not have your spirits dampened. Are you old enough to go alone with friends?
