Today, my flatmate took his hour plus long shower while we both tried to get ready for work. I had a choice to wet myself or pee in a cooking pot. I chose the pot. FML

Sounds like it's time to talk about shower time and what's an appropriate length when you only have one toilet in the house. At the very least, he should ask if you have to use the toilet before he takes the place over.

um surely there was a way around this? a neighbour? nearby toilets? forgive my ignorance I don't live in flat.. but convinced there was another way

The point of roommates is that you sacrifice that kind of privacy in exchange for a lower cost of living. Neither of you has exclusive bathroom rights, and bathroom schedules are a nigjtmare. Tell him to get comfortable with the idea of leaving the door unlocked so you can take a leak, brush your teeth, etc. while he's showering if he's going to spend that kind of time in the morning. Just what I'd do.

Why a cooking pot? Do you not have a kitchen sink?

You should have left the pan under their bed

Next time this happens, go in, use the toilet and when you flush it, if the water pressure is bad, the shower will go either really hot or really cold. Maybe that'll give your roommate the message.
