Not knowing if he has a health issue aside i think it would be your fault. I have a husky and they require a lot of physical activity which you as an owner should have taken to account before committing to him/her if you could not provide. I would take the dog to the vet and get him some help, usually they are good at controlling their metabolism so it shouldn't not an issue.
