Unfortunately, your state is an "at will" state. In simple terms, that means you can be fired with or without cause unless you can prove it was discrimination of a protected class. For example, you can be fired because your boss doesn't like the clothes you are wearing, but not for being a certain gender, race, etc. So, while it is a total dick move by him, it is not illegal.
