Why would you suffer? If you don't like him then dump him.
Just speaking from experience, I dated a guy a long while back who constantly told me that I deserved better and if I broke up with him, he'd understand. When I did come to my senses and ended it (he was possessive, verbally abusive and all-around unpleasant), he went psycho. So in my case, he just said it to get me to reassure him that I would stay. Your guys may have legit self-esteem issues but tread carefully with this one. Especially if he's ever shown abusive tendencies towards you.

If you're suffering you need to break up with him, especially if it's going to cause him so much grief. It's better to agree to get over it rather than drag it out.

Pffft! Probably not far off!
He's messed up...

i did this same thing once, i was with the girl for 2yrs and everything i did made me feel guilty.. i still love her but i dont deserve her and she deserves better also it felt like i was holding her back from having a great life.
hit him in the balls, then as he gives you a confused look, WHAM! bitchslap him in the face as hard as you can. That's like RESET for guys, after that he should work fine :D
