Today, my boyfriend threw out my old voicemail recorder, thinking it was junk. My father passed away years ago. I kept a recording of the last voicemail he'd left me on it so I'd always remember his voice. FML

This is why i hate it when people throw out my shit without asking first

This is actually really depressing. Sorry OP. I hope you can continue to remember your father in a different way.

I'm not saying YDI but you should have made a digital backup. If you've ever listened to an old cassette tape you know all about "magnetic bleed". Assuming it was a tape style machine...

Your boyfriend shouldn't be throwing out your stuff without asking... Unless it was left overs rotting in the fridge.

Never have someone throw something away without your permission...hope your mom has a recording.,,

"Voicemail recorder?" Shit, I AM old! Back in the olden days, we would call it an "answering machine" and call the recordings "messages."

That was my first thought, I'm glad I wasn't the only one. Then I went on to "What a jerk, that sucks."

yeah I'm 17 and that's what i still call it. Voicemail recorder just sounds too formal. I think voicemail and message are interchangeable, though I do still prefer message.

What I wanna know is, how can 400+ people think OP deserves this?

I shared this FML with my partner, whose father was killed 2 years ago in a motorcycle accident. We both agreed that if one of us did something like this to the other, it would be considered justifiable homicide. :p

He shouldn't have done that. He didn't mean to do it on purpose, I'm sure he wouldn't have if he had known. Tell him to ask you before throwing out anything of yours in the future. I'm sure you'll remember him anyway, but I can fully understand how upsetting this must be.

Sometimes you just have to let go. It's not nice that it was thrown away, but your dad wouldn't want to see you so upset about it. Make him proud of what you do with your future, not what you do to remember the past.

who the hell votes ydi on this one... assholes

You should've told him what that meant to you in the first place and he never would've thought it was meant to be thrown. Ygm ? Communication !!!
