That's pretty messed up to do to a little kid! I'd be throwing some plastic eggs at that douchebag until one cracked opened and gave him back his brain!
It's similar to what my 7 year old nephew said to his 4 year old brother the other day. We were going for a walk and saw 2 hens and their chicks pecking at something on the side of the road. When we got closer we saw they were actually eating a rabbit that had been hit by a car. The older nephew recognised that it was a rabbit and called out "Looks like Easter has been cancelled! The Easter bunny got into trouble when he tried to pick up a few extra eggs!". This upset his younger brother quite a bit as you could imagine. They are used to seeing dead kangaroos, etc, on the side of the road, so seeing a dead animal didn't bother them, but the younger one was looking forward to his visit from the Easter bunny. Not to worry, the Easter Bibly took his place. That is what they have been trying to encourage Australians to get, especially seeing as rabbits are a a pest here and bilbies are endangered.
Your brother-in-law is an asshole
Come Christmas: "I found Santa Claus!" oO
Your brother-in-law is sick. Was he trying to be funny??
how did he get a dead rabbit?

Get your nephew a pet bunny and tell him that you were asked by the Easter Bunny to have him raise and care for the bunny. It'll distract him and he'll learn a thing or two about being a good pet owner.
so explain to your nephew that your brother in law is a jerk and he's playing a prank. I'm not an Easter Bunny person, but you don't screw with kids like that. it's up to his parents if they want to reveal that type of stuff
