I love how everyone is bashing the OP for saying something like that. Tell me something. If someone suddenly came out to you that they tried to commit suicide, would YOU know what to say? I doubt it. I understand where OP is coming from, I had a friend of mine admit to me that they attempted suicide. I was at a loss for words, and yes I ended up saying "Did you do it?" because I could not think. My friend took no offense, and said he was expecting either silence or something silly like that, and he actually laughed about it.
