Today, my dad took me to the empty parking lot of Wal-Mart to try driving for the first time. All was well until he shouted at me for going too slow, which startled me into jerking the wheel and simultaneously stomping on the gas. I don't think Geico covers a Wal-Mart-sized dent in one's car. FML

OP here! I can't believe this got posted. Moreover, I can't believe I forgot to log in. *facepalm* For those commenting about there being no such thing as an empty Wal-Mart parking lot, it was the rarely-used back lot where virtually no one goes. So it was deserted enough for a rookie's practice.

15 minutes in the Walmart parking lot didn't save you money on car insurance huh..

I would like to say it only gets better while driving with parents.. But it doesn't. Better luck next time, OP.

Just spend the money on a driving instructor. All of them have a break on the passenger side, so unless you do not speed up to avoid an accident that requires you to get out of hand's way, you are much safer in their car rather than your own. Believe me, despite the fact that my first lesson when I was going for my road license required me going through major streets and construction sites, I felt much safer knowing that my instructor had a break on his side and that he was less judgmental (in the sense that it is not someone who knows you well and is too comfortable with what they say or do).

Unfortunately, at least in my experience, driving instructors want you to actually know a bit about driving before taking you in the car. If you want to be able to take a course with a driving instructor, your parents still have to teach you the basics.

13- You had me confused for a moment until I realized you meant to spell "brake".

There is no such thing as an empty wall mart parking lot. This is a recession

My thoughts exactly. I was wondering if they went driving at 5 am on a Monday morning or something...

I dunno, our Walmart closes at 5pm. Not all Walmarts everywhere are open all night.

We have a lot of white trash where I live. They eat, sleep and breath Walmart

The next question is does geico cover a car sized dent in wal-mart?

really? if that's all it takes to put you into the side of a walmart maybe you shouldn't be driving. f your dad's life for that nice spike in his insurance

Especially since you have to drive a decent distance from the parking lot to the building. You'd have to be on that gas pretty hard to not have enough time to stop.

Seriously, before driving for even the first time you have to know that panic=brake, not gas.

I think it's been too long since you guys drove for the first time. I almost took out a cyclist. There's a reason why you learn to drive with a proper instructor - they have a brake pedal that they can use. Learner drivers can and will panic and go into a wall. OP's Dad was an idiot for not realising this, then a further idiot to pressurise a new driver to go faster, and distract and panic them by yelling.

34 - I agree entirely, also, I now consider, "learning drivers can and will panic and go into a wall" to be one of my favorite quotes

34- Nope, sorry. Probably my second learning session there was a tractor trailer on the same back road as me that forced me off the road. I didn't panic and run into a tree so I wouldn't quite say its normal.

70 - oh, you didn't do something, so it's not normal?

Like a good neighbor...oops nevermind you have geico.. fyl should've called all state, than you would be protected from mayhem like yourself....

Allstate, brah. You're mixin' up your insurance ads.

for those of you who didn't get it.... I did all three insurances on purpose lol oh boy fyls

I don't get it. I'm not trying to be controversial, but Americans have it so much easier. They only have to drive an auto- and get a dual license (I think) whilst I have to practice in a manual to drive both transmissions

Be happy, since you have to learn manual as well, you'll never have troubles driving any car. Being limited too only automatic in the usa isn't too bad (since very few have a stickshift) but being limited to that in any other part of the world is crap...!

In the U.S., driver's licenses, vehicle registrations, etc. are handled by each state. In my state (and probably most others), no knowledge of manual transmissions is needed to get a license. The license allows one to drive cars (and small trucks) with either kind of transmission, even if the driver has no experience with those.

When I was growing up, it took me three years and two learner's permits before my step mother finally took pity on me and took me out for driving lessons. She didn't even like me and she knew that it was important that I drive. So, at least feel grateful that your father is willing to spend enough time with you to teach you to drive, even if he does seem to be a bit over reactive.

"A bit" is a bit of an understatement But true, there are many different levels of learning-to-drive hell — the world should really work on that /:

at least it wasn't costco....costco size dents are much worse

My dad always yells at me while I'm driving, that's why I try not to drive with him. However, other than yelling hes taught me to drive with distractions by picking at me (pinching etc), to prevent me from wrecking. And it has.worked quite well. So, its a painful learning experience.
