Its painful for them and it only works if they are caught and scanned by a shelter. Its best to resgiter them with your county and have tgem wear their tags. It'll give the same results as a chip and even more effective if someone finds them and contacts the owners.
where i live they chip them while they are out under, like when theyre asleep for a spay/neuter, so no it wouldnt hurt...
Microchipping ain't GPS. Getting your dog microchipped doesn't mean you can then find them if they're lost...
It's still a good idea to chip them. If your dog is stolen tags can be removed but a chip can't. Some dogs need a looser collar, or you can't physically make a collar tight enough to make sure the dog can't get it off due to the way they're built. So some dogs can slip their collar. Or the collar can break due to multiple reasons. So tags can be easily lost. A chip is under the skin. Unless they get ripped up where the chip is they really can't loose it. If any rescues or shelters get the dog they (should) automatically scan all dogs for chips if they don't have tags.
I use to work at a vet clinic. The chip is very tiny (about the size of a grain of rice) and inserted through a needle. They can do it while they're asleep but it's not required and microchipping hurts just about as bad as getting blood drawn or one of the shots they get.
@24 Sadly if a dog/cat only has tags and is stolen the tags can be removed. Microchipping is so if a stolen dog is brought into a clinic they can use a scanner that detects the chip and it'll show the pet is not theirs.
#52 who tattoos a dog??
57, it used to be done all the time about 20-30 years ago. It was a green ink and tattooed on the inside flap of their ear. It basically worked the same way as a microchip does. My aunts dogs were tattooed when I was a little kid, I remember seeing it (they used to fade quite a lot though).
Maybe OP can put GPS trackers on the dog's necklace, I heard some people do that with their kids's clothes or even placed it under their skin
Maybe he didn't go far at all and you just didn't see him. I can't find my dog half of the time and just leave the door for a few minutes before she comes back because she knew I wasn't there with her anymore. Maybe he was just on the other side of the house or just somewhere you couldn't spot him and he wasn't coming to you when you called.
you should be thankful to god instead of cursing yourself by saying FML
Clearly a "house dog"
My dog Deacon does this. We used to chase after him but my father finally just said let him go, cause he always came back. He intentionally does it in the rain too, cause he knows we won't follow him especially if it is raining. There's a solid difference between a dog who's stupid and just doesn't listen and one who's smart enough to know he can test the authority and get away with it.
Smart dog, because the cat didn't come back until the very next day!
Luckily you only hand to "pound" the pavement and not "unpound" the dog?
Relax man, one comment is enough
I think he meant "one bad comment is enough"
It's a dogs world, just wanted to take you for a walk.
At least you got your dog back OP

5 hours wasted is better than losing your dog
Hey man, at least he came back!
