Today, my father in law drunkenly announced at dinner that he wished my husband had married my best friend. No one stuck up for me. Not even my husband. FML

That's just wrong. It's going to make holidays very difficult I'm sure. Drunk or not, you every right to tell your father in law he's an ass and walk out. Your hubby should've said something.

I agree with twelve and if you were driving then leave his butt behind

It's probably true. Maybe your best friend is a superior woman who is just too good for your husband. Your father-in-law and husband are lamenting that the best he could do was to settle for an asshole like you.

I agree and disagree with the previous comments stating that OP's husband should have stuck up for her. Although she should know to stick up for herself, in laws are a complicated issue. You can't just curse at them because you're pissed at what they said even if it's out of line. Main reason because there will ALWAYS be people around to exaggerate the facts. That being said you have to keep your mouth shut until you get the in law and spouse alone and express what needs to be said appropriately WHEN AND ONLY WHEN you are level headed. When you're married it's not just to that one person it's to the family as well, and they will ALWAYS be a part your life and your child/children's too. What OP's husband did by not saying anything is probably the best decision that could have been taken, but the second step is for him to take her aside and tell her he loves her and make her feel secure in their marriage. Then when his father sobered up he could have spoken to him and asked him to apologize. That is it, marriage is complicated learn to deal with it OP.

The family is definitely NOT always in your childrens' lives. You as the parent have the right to decide who is and who isn't and if you have shitty in laws you can make sure they don't see them.

Well of course, but in this case it's not like the father in law beat her up. Exiling family from your children's lives is a delicate matter, just because they don't like OP it doesn't mean they won't love their grandchildren.

i think its more that he was drunk and they didnt take him seriously. or atleast they didnt want to make it worse by trying to reason with or argue with a drunk

I see a potential three way in action. That will definitely get rid of the awkwardness of this situation.

Sometimes when a drunk person says something it best to ignore it
